About Cobar

Cobar Shire is situated in the centre of New South Wales at the crossroads of the Barrier Highway and the Kidman Way and has excellent road, rail and air links to most of Australia's capital cities. With an area of 44,065 km squared, the Shire is almost the same size as the whole of Tasmania. It is home to 7,000 people, the majority of whom - 5,500 - live in the town of Cobar. The Shire's prosperity is built around the thriving mining - copper, lead, silver, zinc, gold - and pastoral industries, which are strongly supported by a wide range of attractions and activities, that make it a major tourist destination.

Being a vibrant town based on expanding mining, agriculture and tourism industries, Cobar boasts numerous business opportunities for developers and entrepreneurs.

In particular, Council is interested in a number of infrastructure projects and is keen to further discuss these ideas with developers.

·         Developing another industrial estate to expand the options available to new industrial businesses.

·         Developing a retirement village based on premium self contained villas for the over 55's adjacent to Council's current aged hostel and village.

·         Council has undertaken planning for a new residential estate and is now deciding on the benefits of contracting out the development or undertaking works in-house. Developers are encouraged to discuss the project with Council.

·         Additional caravan park facilities are required, whether it be an extension of the existing Council owned facility, or building a new facility which could be a private enterprise.

·         Upgrade of Cobar's airport infrastructure, including the provision of jet fuel and improved amenities.

Business Opportunities within the Shire

In addition, there are numerous opportunities to establish new businesses within the Shire. Interested parties could contact Council, the Cobar Business Association  or the Cobar Enterprise Facilitation Steering Committee for more information or assistance.

In particular, numerous opportunities exist around the mining and tourism sectors, including support -based industries. To assist in the establishment of new businesses, Council is supporting the establishment of Cobar Enterprise Facilitation.

Ideal position

Cobar is ideally located in the middle of NSW, on the junction of the east-west Barrier Highway linking Sydney to Adelaide and the north-south Kidman Way, linking Queensland to Melbourne. Rail and air infrastructure are also in place, with a daily freight train to Sydney, and 26 passenger flights a week to Dubbo and Sydney.  A daily bus service operates to Dubbo and Broken Hill which links with services to all capital cities.

Cobar has a range of housing opportunities, from rural to rural residential, large sized town blocks and unit developments. In late 2006 Council released 64 lots which sold out in three days. Housing and units are currently being constructed on these sites. A further Council subdivision of 47 lots is planned. There are also a number of private subdivisions being undertaken around the Shire. Commercial sites are available around the town and industrial land is available in the industrial estate on the eastern edge of Cobar.

Facilities Available

Facilities in town include ambulance station, hospital with accident and emergency, a medical centre with general practitioners, a physiotherapist, visiting health care professionals in a wide range of fields, aged care facilities, pharmacy, banks, post office, hairdressers, child care facilities, pre-school, two primary schools, a high school and TAFE campus.

The town has excellent sporting infrastructure, including an 18 hole golf course, bowling greens, tennis courts, football fields, netball courts, indoor youth centre which incorporates squash and basketball courts, gym and judo/aerobics areas, race course, show grounds and aquatic centre which incorporates a 50m pool, children's pool area and water slide.

Mining

The local mines are undertaking significant investment projects in a bid to increase production. A large proportion of businesses in the industrial estate service the mining industry.

There are three mines in close proximity to Cobar

·         Peak Gold Mine report the life of their mine to be greater than 10 years. In 2007 their estimated production is 120000 ounces. Both gold and copper are being mined and a new surface decline has recently been completed.

·         CSA Mine employs around 350 people and is primarily a copper mine. The mine has a relatively long life and holds tenements to around 820km2 in the Cobar area.

·         Endeavor Mine is an underground zinc, lead and silver mine. The recent installation of a paste plant will see the life of the mine extended to at least 15 years. A new decline is also under construction.

In addition, new exploration opportunities are being investigated around the Shire by several mining companies.
