About Orange

Orange is a modern city that has grown from its rich mining past, in fact Orange was the home to Australia's first payable gold discovery at Ophir in 1851. Orange has a population of 38,000 people and with surrounding towns and villages, supports a population of 100,000 through its industrial, commercial and service resources.

Located just 3.5 hours west of Sydney and 3 hours north west of Canberra in Central NSW, Orange is a cultural city, blending historic buildings and streetscapes with cosmopolitan cafes, restaurants, theatres and galleries. Orange's strong diverse economy, excellent education and health facilities and broad range of community services provide an excellent base for residents and visitors alike.

Orange's industry base is significant and diverse, ranging from apples through to whitegoods manufacturing, mining, tourism, agricultural support and research facilities.

The region has consolidated its position as a nationally significant metallurgical mining centre with the development of Cadia and Ridgeway Gold and Copper mining projects. The cumulative economic impact of the operation of Cadia Hill and Ridgeway Gold Mines is estimated to be in the order of $426 - $453 million in annual regional output, $271- $286 million in annual value added and $40 - $47 million in annual household income. The mines currently employ some 500 people.

Electrolux and an extensive range of medical specialists and health services are concentrated in Orange.

Population

In 2001, the population of Orange Cabonne Blayney (OCB) region was 53,549, which is an increase of 3.1% compared to 1996. The population of Orange in 2003 was estimated at 37,526, an estimated 7.7% growth since 1996 (re Orange Economic Profile)

Labour Force

In 2001 there were approximately 24,900 people in the OCB labour force, of which 62% work full time, 28% work part-time. The average rate of unemployment in the OCB region is lower than the average for regional NSW. The average increase in employed residents in the OCB region was 6.5% in 2001, which is greater than the 5.5% average for regional NSW.

Income

The most common income level in the OCB region in 2001 was $200 to $299, although the median weekly income was $300 to $399. Approximately 25.7% of residents in the OCB region earned more than $600 per week in 2001. The average for regional NSW for the same period is 22%.

Skills

The largest occupation groups in Orange are professionals and intermediate clerical, sales and service workers. The high number of professionals can be attributed to the large property and business services and health industries in Orange, while the large number of intermediate clerical, sales and service workers is mainly due to the large retail and service industry. The largest occupation group in Cabonne and Blayney is managers and administrators. This is due in part to the relatively high number of farmers and farm managers. The distribution of qualifications in Orange-Cabonne-Blayney is similar to the average for regional NSW.
