About Penrith

Penrith City is located at the western fringe of the Sydney metropolitan area - about 54 kilometres from the Sydney GPO. Penrith City is bounded by Hawkesbury City in the north, Blacktown City and Fairfield City in the east, Liverpool City and Wollondilly Shire in the south and Blue Mountains City in the west.

Penrith City is a residential and rural area, with most of the population living in residential areas in a linear corridor along the Great Western Highway and the main western railway. The City encompasses a land area of 407 square kilometres, of which around 80% is rural and rural-residential. Most of the urban area is residential, with some commercial areas and industrial areas, including extractive industries and manufacturing. Much of the rural area is used for agricultural purposes, including dairying, poultry farming, hobby farming, orcharding, market gardening and horse breeding. Major commercial centres are located at Penrith and St Marys.

Major infrastructure

Major infrastructure features of the City include University of Western Sydney - Penrith Campus, TAFE NSW Western Sydney Institute (Nepean College), Penrith Stadium, Penrith Plaza Shopping Centre, the St Marys Central Business District, Penrith Leagues Club, Nepean Hospital, Penrith Lakes Scheme, the Nepean River, Blue Mountains National Park (the portion east of the Nepean River), Castlereagh Bicentennial Demonstration Forest (Castlereagh Nature Reserve), Mulgoa Nature Reserve, Penrith Lakes Regional Park and Werrington Lakes Flora & Fauna Reserve. The City is served by the Great Western Highway, The Northern Road, the Western Motorway and the main western railway line, with stations at Emu Plains, Kingswood, Penrith, St Marys and Werrington.

Population

In 2001, the total population of the LGA was estimated at 177,411. It is expected to increase to 192,034 by 2016, at an average annual growth rate of 0.53%. This is based on an increase of more than 10,400 households during the period, with the average number of persons per household falling from 2.96 to 2.71.

There are a number of areas in Penrith City that are expected to increase in population to 2016, with the largest gains expected in Glenmore Park, followed by Penrith Lakes, Penrith and St Marys Release Area. Significant but smaller gains are also expected in Werrington, Caddens Release Area and Claremont Meadows. The population increases are based on household growth, which in turn relates to new residential opportunities. The forecast population growth rates are lower than household growth as a result of the decreasing number of people per household. This is a pattern that is likely to affect all areas of Penrith City during this period.
