About Tamworth

The Tamworth Regional Council area is located in the New England Region of New South Wales, about 410 kilometres north-west of Sydney. The Tamworth Regional Council area is bounded by Gwydir Shire in the north, Uralla Shire and the Walcha Council area in the east, Upper Hunter Shire in the south, and Liverpool Plains, Gunnedah and Narrabri Shires in the west.

The Tamworth Regional Council area includes the urban centre of Tamworth and the surrounding predominantly rural area. The Council area encompasses a total land area of over 9,600 square kilometres. Most of the rural area is used for sheep and cattle grazing, lucerne and wheat growing, and poultry farming. The majority of the population live in the urban centre of Tamworth. About one quarter of the population lives in the small townships of Barraba, Kootingal, Manilla and Nundle, the villages of Attunga, Bendemeer, Dungowan, Duri, Moonbi, Somerton, Woolbrook and Woolomin, and various rural localities. Tamworth has developed as a regional centre for north-western New South Wales and is well known for its annual Country Music Festival.

Employment

Job firms report that the region sustains good quality employment prospects with continued high demand for skilled workers.

If you're a qualified tradesman, or a skilled professional, then you are top of the wanted list on Tamworth regional employer shopping lists. And employment agencies also report they're targeting more employers to help them match increasing jobseeker demands and numbers.

The building boom in housing and commercial development has translated into a significant jobs generator for construction workers. Building firms are crying out for all types of trades-qualified staff, including everyone from plumbers, builders and brickies, to roofers, tilers and cabinet makers.

Agriculture

While Tamworth's economy continues to diversify, agriculture remains the backbone of the economy. It is estimated that over 307,000 hectares of land is devoted to agricultural production, with the gross value of production estimated at over $75 million.

Core activities include Beef, Sheep, Grain, Diary, Poultry and Lucerne. Recently Tamworth has hosted an extraordinary growth of boutique agriculture ventures including Olives, Vines, Nuts, Specialised Game Fowl, Fish Farming, Hydroponics, Goats, Alpacas, Buffalo and Berries.

Intensive animal production such as cattle feedlots, poultry for egg and meat production, and piggeries are expanding. Tamworth district is also the largest poultry producer in New South Wales.

Many sectors supply local processing plants, some of these being major national or international companies. Regional agriculture services include three abattoirs and internationally successful flour, grain bi-products, malt and dairy manufacturing operations.

One of the fastest growing agriculture sectors in the region is the hobby farm market. Hobby farms are generally less than 40 hectares (100 acres) and are often run as small productive farms. There are a wide range of services in the region for the hobby farmer including specialised monthly markets offering small lots of cattle, horses and poultry.

Employment in the agricultural sector has grown 77% to 500 persons in the statistical local area alone over the period 1991 to 2001.  A large proportion of employees in the manufacturing industry (1,400) are reliant on a prosperous and expanding agricultural industry.

There is a wide range of agricultural services available in Tamworth.  These include private and public sector research facilities, consultancies and technology companies developing and manufacturing measuring and grading equipment for regional and international application.

Tamworth district is serviced by a large office of the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources has expanded its base in Tamworth.

Horses Are Big Business in Tamworth!

Recognised by many as the sporting horse capital of Australia, Tamworth is a thriving equine centre and boast four major equine association headquarters.

Tamworth and surrounding areas have become a breeding centre with hundreds of studs producing many champions each year in sporting and racing pursuits.  Some of the countries best veterinarian and alternated equine medical practitioners are located in the region. The latest in equine care is provided by surgeries that have operating theatres and post-operative facilities.

Tamworth's central location and increased equine activity has motivated equine, livestock, local government, business leaders and the community to develop a centre that will house the increasing numbers of animals and competitors in a new and modern undercover facility. The NSW and Federal Governments have backed the concept of the centre and will contribute $3.35 million and $6 million respectively. Association offices, indoor arenas, hundreds of stables for horses and livestock, education facilities, bars, restaurant, campdraft and rodeo arena, equine sporting fields and courses, camping grounds and many more services will provide the community and Australia with a equine Mecca.

The horses and related businesses make up Australia's second largest employer and 4th / 5th largest industry.  This means Tamworth and the region will share in this vibrant industry and it's exciting future.
