About Wollongong

Wollongong City is located in the Illawarra Region of New South Wales, about 80 kilometres south of Sydney. Wollongong City is bounded by Sutherland Shire in the north, the Tasman Sea in the east, Lake Illawarra and Shellharbour City in the south and Wingecarribee Shire, Wollondilly Shire and Campbelltown City in the west.

Wollongong City is a rural and residential area, with substantial industrial and commercial areas. Urban development is mainly along the coast, between the Illawarra Escarpment in the west and the Tasman Sea in the east. The City encompasses a total land area of 714 square kilometres, including bushland, dams, cliffs and beaches.

Income

Analysis of household income levels in Wollongong City in 2006 compared to the Illawarra Statistical Division shows that there was a larger proportion of high income households (those earning $1,700 per week or more) but a similar proportion of low income households (those earning less than $500 per week).

Overall, 21.3% of the households earned a high income, and 24.7% were low income households, compared with 18.7% and 24.6% respectively for the Illawarra Statistical Division.

Industry

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Wollongong City in 2006 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

·         Manufacturing (9,173 persons or 12.0%)

·         Health Care and Social Assistance (8,962 persons or 11.7%)

·         Retail Trade (8,332 persons or 10.9%)

In combination these three industries employed 26,467 people in total or 34.6% of the employed resident population.

In comparison, the Illawarra Statistical Division employed 11.4% in Manufacturing; 11.5% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 12.2% in Retail Trade.

Travel

In 2006, there were 4,849 people who caught public transport to work (train, bus, tram or ferry) in Wollongong City, compared with 54,397 who drove in private vehicles (car –as driver, car – as passenger, motorbike, or truck).

Analysis of the method of travel to work of the residents in Wollongong City in 2006 compared to the Illawarra Statistical Division shows that 6.3% used public transport, while 71.1% used a private vehicle, compared with 4.0% and 72.3% respectively in the Illawarra Statistical Division.

There were no major differences between Wollongong City and the Illawarra Statistical Division's travel to work data in 2006.

The largest changes in the method of travel to work by resident population in Wollongong City between 2001 and 2006 were for those nominated:

·         Car - as driver (+4,443 persons);

·         Did not go to work (+471 persons);

·         Train (-730 persons), and;

·         Car - as passenger (-372 persons).
